Travel Essentials: Nontoxic Beauty and Wellness Multitaskers

Non toxic beauty and wellness for travel

Ever since I adopted a cleaner lifestyle, I’ve been looking for ways to upgrade my travel essentials as well. That means finding nontoxic beauty and wellness products that keep me feeling and looking my best without taking up a lot of room in my carry on.

It’s tempting to try to combat the woes of travel (read: sleep, skin and stomach troubles) with tons of lotions, potions and pills, but trust me, next time you can skip the drugstore travel toiletries aisle.

Here are a few of my favorite carry-on approved, multitasking, nontoxic beauty and wellness essentials for travel.

Oil cleanser

Remove makeup, cleanse and soften your skin with one product. I love the Elizabeth Dehn vitamin B enzyme cleansing oil by One Love Organics because it rinses clean without needing a washcloth and it smells delicious. I put it in a squeezable travel tube. Their skin savior multi-tasking wonder balm is also amazing for travel (and easier to pack).

Rosewater face spray

I never leave home without my DIY rosewater spray. If you don’t have all the ingredients on hand, you can just put this Thayer’s rose toner into a TSA approved spray bottle. It hydrates, soothes, refreshes and tones all at once. Sometimes I wash my face with it too. And the smell is so relaxing—perfect for long flights.

Non-toxic perfume roll-on

Ok, so this one isn’t exactly a multitasker, although it smells so good I guess it could pass for aromatherapy too. 😉 The essential oil based roll-ons from by Rosie Jane is the answer to all my clean perfume prayers. Your average perfume is full of toxic chemicals (often from petroleum) that can be harmful to your health. These scents are made with safe ingredients and smell amazing. And it doesn’t hurt that the packaging is beautiful too.

Clean sunscreen and moisturizer duo

I’m a fan of this multitasking Supergoop sunscreen and serum. You get vitamin-packed moisture plus safer sunscreen in a 1-2-punch. It keeps my skin hydrated and protected from the sun without the harmful ingredients in standard sunscreens or the white chalkiness of mineral sunscreens.

Magnesium

Magnesium calms muscles, helps with sleep and aids digestion. From anxiety-inducing flights to jet-lag to sore muscles, it’s an awesome travel supplement to keep on hand. You can get it in tablet, powder or topical form. I use Natural Vitality’s Calm these individual packets at home and abroad.

Dr. Bronner’s soap

The ultimate beauty multitasker. Dr. Bronner’s soap can be used for washing your hair, body, face, teeth, clothes, makeup brushes, you name it. Get the travel-size peppermint for an energizing boost or the lavender if you need help de-stressing.

Natural baby wipes

There are natural hand sanitizer sprays out there, but I haven’t found one that I like yet, so I go for natural baby wipes. I also like the fact that I can use a wipe to clean my face, the airplane tray table, subway poles, etc.

Superfood powder + probiotics

Irregular sleeping schedules, dehydration and indulging in not-the-best foods can wear down even the healthiest travelers. Superfood supplements are a great way to fill in nutrition gaps while you’re jet-setting. On the other hand, probiotics are important for keeping your gut flora balanced and healthy, which keeps your digestive system on track and helps prevent illness. Just remember to get probiotics that don’t need to be refrigerated. I’m taking along these packets of Green Vibrance with probiotics on my upcoming trip. Warning: they are not the tastiest! I love that it’s superfood and probiotics supplement in one though.

Lavender essential oil

The MVP of essential oils, lavender can help you sleep, prevent motion sickness, soothe insect bites and cuts, and it just smells darn good. Put a few drops on your temples on the plane or when you go to bed. Mix lavender with oil or aloe (or in this rosewater spray) to calm your skin. Or take a relaxing whiff right out of the bottle if that’s how you like to roll. I like Aura Cacia or Mountain Rose Herbs.
